Lorent Grandpa Metz Talking Points
For school, I had to speak about our heritage. Here is what I said.
My Great Grandpa Metz was born in 1899 near Munich, Germany.
His name was Hans Metz, but once here in America, he went by the name of John Metz.
He had one brother and two sisters. He went to school to learn how to be a locksmith. He was a really good mechanic and carpenter. He worked on big machines in a factory, and invented a few things.
He came to the United States in 1925. He came by a ship - it landed at Ellis Island, near New York City. The ship name was Westphalia.
When he went to his first job interview here in America, it was to be a limousine driver. He didn’t want to have that job, so he shaved his head bald. They thought he looked funny, so he didn’t get the job. He was happy about that and went to work with Machines in a factory in New Jersey. Later on, he had 3 children and my grandma was one of them. They had moved to Syracuse, New York and he built furniture for a famous company called Stickley.
His favorite food was bratwurst – kind of white hot dog – boiled in water to heat it up. With mustard.
He like to go fishing and my dad remembers going to fish with him at Cazanovia Lake.
